چکیده

We present a new method to compute stellar ages in Globular Clusters (GC) that is ten times more precise than the traditional isochrone fitting procedure. The method relies on accurate stellar evolutionary tracks and on photometry for GCs complete down to the main sequence, and it is based on counting number of stars in two different regions of the CMD: the red giant branch and the main-sequence. We have applied this method to the globular cluster M68 and found an age of 16.4±0.2 Gyr for (m −M)V = 15.3. This new method reduces the error associated to the uncertainty in the distance modulus by a factor of two, the error due to the choice of the value for the mixing length parameter to almost zero and the error due to the colour-Teff transformation to zero. Subject headings: globular clusters: ages – globular clusters: M68

Globular Cluster Ages from Main Sequence Fitting and Detached, Eclipsing Binaries: The Case of 47 Tuc

Age constraints are most often placed on globular clusters by comparing their CMDs with theoretical isochrones. The recent discoveries of detached, eclipsing binaries in such systems by the Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE) provide new insights into their ages and, at the same time, much needed tests of stellar evolution models. We describe efforts to model the properties of the detached, eclipsin...

Ages and Metallicities of Globular Clusters in NGC 4472

We have derived ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 globular clusters associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. Based upon a calibration with Galactic globular clusters, we find that our sample of globular clusters in NGC 4472 span a metallicity range of approximately -1.6 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0 dex. There is evidence of a radial metallicity gradient in the globular cluster sy...

Relative Ages of Globular Clusters

Ages of extragalactic globular clusters can provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies. In this contribution the photometric methods of age dating old globular cluster systems are summarised. The spectroscopic approach is reviewed with an emphasis of the right choice of age diagnostics. We present a new method of quantifying the relatively best age-sensitive spectros...

Ja n 19 98 Issues in the Formation of Globular Cluster Systems

1. Cluster Ages in the Milky Way Halo Globular clusters make up less than 1% of the visible halo stars. These, in turn, form only a few percent of all the mass present in the potential well of a large galaxy. However, these ancient star systems contain information about the history of halo formation out of all proportion to their fraction of the total mass. The literature on globular cluster sy...

Age and Metallicity Estimations in Old Stellar Populations from Strömgren Photometry

We present a new technique to determine age and metallicity of old stellar populations (globular clusters and elliptical galaxies) using an iterative principal component analysis on narrow band (Strömgren) colors. Our technique is capable of reproducing globular cluster [Fe/H] values to 0.02 dex and CMD ages to 1.0 Gyrs. We also present preliminary results on the application of our technique to...
